Five of our favorite blackout shade brands

If you are wondering about a simple way to help your child get better sleep, black out curtains are one easy solution! One of the foundations to healthy sleep habits is setting up a sleep environment conducive to sleep. We all, children and adults alike, get our most restful sleep when we sleep in a distraction-free, sleep promoting environment. One simple way to create this environment for your child, regardless of their age, is to keep the room dark for each and every sleep—the darker the better!

And the way to achieve this is by using black-out shades! But are they really that necessary? In short, YES!

Even the slightest bit of light creeping in from a window can prevent your child from getting longer stretches of sleep, and even lead to early morning wake ups. In order to eliminate light from the room, we suggest investing in some quality blackout shades.

Here are five of our favorite brands of blackout shades…

  1. Tommee Tippee GroAnywhere Portable Travel Blackout Blinds

These blackout shades are our go-to for travel! They are super simple to hang up and they adjust to just about any window size. The blinds attach directly to the window using powerful suction cups, and they contain Velcro strips along all sides to make sizing adjustments easy. This is a traveling MUST HAVE for parents who want to turn any space into a dark and sleep conducive environment.

2. Target Foil Stars Blackout Curtain

If you are on the hunt for a blackout shade that looks like a regular curtain, look no further! These affordable shades hang from your standard curtain rod, block out light, and fit windows up to 63 inches long. They are made of a light cotton-polyester blend material, and are machine washable making them easy to maintain. We love the simple star pattern, and appreciate that they are not the typical dark color shade most blackout curtains come in.

3. NICETOWN Total Shade Curtains

Another one of our favourite curtain-style blackout shades are these thermal insulated panels from NICETOWN. They come in a variety of sizes and colours to compliment any nursery theme, and they hang from your standard curtain rod. The sewn in black liner also helps to block out summer heat as well as the winter cold. They even act as a sound barrier to any outside noise as an added plus.

4.  CHICOLOGY Cordless Blackout Shades

We love the look of these cordless blackout shades! They come in a variety of sizes and colours, and can be drawn or raised to any height so you can decide how much light to let into the room when baby is not sleeping. They have a unique look, and the signature honeycomb cells act as insulators keeping the room cool during the summer, and warm during the winter. You also have the option to order custom sizing.

5. Acholo Blackout Roller Window Shades

These roller shades are cordless, making them a child safe option. They also are available in several different sizes and colours (a range of neutrals). The shades can be mounted on either the inside or outside of the window frame, and the blind is operated by a spring system. It can be set at any desired position and has a steady, adjustable roll-up speed.

Your baby’s sleep environment plays a major role in their ability to get good quality sleep. In addition to making sure the room is completely dark, be sure to use a white noise machine, offer sleep in a safe independent sleep space such as a crib or bassinet, and keep the room free from distraction. Taking the time to prepare your child’s sleep environment will set them up for successful sleep!
